The Plastics formed in late 2007 when the Righini brothers decided to expand their explorations from their punk band HOAX, widen their horizons and reform a band with a fresh take on music. Feeling very restricted by boundaries of the “punk genre” and bursting with new ideas that wouldn’t fit into any mould, they set about creating The Plastics.
Soon after the idea was spawned, classically trained guitarist Karl Rohloff joined the band on bass and Arjuna Kohlstock on lead guitar to create a potent mesh of bluesy indie, disco-punk sound that has come to describe The Plastics these days.
They released their first self-titled EP – The Plastics shortly after, forming sessions filled with ideas and spontaneous creativity and a second EP, called “Kiss The Plastics” in 2008. They decided to take a route of mass production and distributed a 1000 copies of each release for free, quickly gaining the band a large and dedicated fan-base
The Plastics pay homage to retro-rock and classic pop imagery with their unique sounds, and hold the core values of rock close by being focussed on live performance.
They have already performed with the majority of South Africa’s most sought after musical acts and in their first year on the local music scene, The Plastics claimed 1st prize at The Redbull Radar competition at Rocking the Daisies in 2008 and were finalists in ‘The Road to V-Fest’ competition for the best unsigned band in SA.
The Plastics continue to fine tune their sound everyday and are becoming more comfortable and aware as a live stage presence. With their 3rd release “Shark” they have received critical acclaim both on the underground and commercial music scene, spawning hits on 5fm and countless gigs.
Their following is growing in numbers everyday and The Plastics are steadily changing the face of S.A Indie rock music!
