Tommy Gun grew his infatuation with music by spending quality time with his father’s old school record collection. This would eventually create a platform for his modern selections of leftfield Indie, Nu-Disco and Electro, as he evolved as a DJ. Tommy Gun’s sound is as unique as it is crowd-pleasing. Non-commercial yet accessible, he favours the intricacies of melody and vocals over big bass lines.

In 2007, he was offered a chance as junior resident at the Untamed Youth night at Fiction, the ideal start for a budding Indie DJ. Since then he has taken over the reins as head resident/promoter and turned Untamed Youth into the successful weekly institution it is today, with invaluable help from good friend Haasbroek. He is also closely associated to The Assembly, with regular appearances alongside South Africa’s top talent such as Desmond & The Tutus, Heuwels Fantasties, Jack Parow and Gazelle.

2010 was a breakthrough year in which he proved his mettle at major festivals Earthdance and Synergy Live. He was also invited to travel to Johannesburg twice for headline appearances, and played internationally for the first time at the Copenhagen Jazzhouse in Denmark. Tommy Gun has been sharp shooting his way through 2011 thus far, with record attendances at Untamed Youth, epic sets at both Oppikoppi and Rocking The Daisies Festivals, a beach party set at RAMfest and alongside Designer Drugs (USA) and Belzebass (ITA) and Deadmau5 (CAN)

An avid DJ and Producer Remy Gold has been a constant figure under many guises on the Cape Town music scene for many years.

Originally rooted in Hip-hop and Rap music Remy began Djing in the mid 00′s, playing the gems of the “underground”, marginalized events and venue’s in the scene, including a residency at Marvel and Joburg in Long Street, CPT. He steadily climbed the ranks with his high attention to technical skill and infectious selection.

He began producing and emphasizing collecting on musical hardware – analog vintage synths, drum machine and upon moving to London became steadily more obsessed with sourcing and digging for gear, as well as records. His MPC drumming skills became finely honed and with the explosion of west coast, spacey hip-hop the likes of Samiyam and Flying lotus, Remy was catapulted along a more solid path.

Flash forward to his move back to the Cape shores and his enthusiasm for music, he has created a platform for many others to expose their sound and grow it organically to a great crowd.

He hosts a steady fixture at The Waiting Room lounge in Long Street every Thursday, where he explores more avenues of his multi-genre interest including the sounds of UK Funky, Kwaito and Future Bass music.

A true audiophile, he continues to produce constantly, spawning a collaborative project entitled “Gold Tooth” with Nonku Phiri and has build up the reputation of being one of the best purveyors of quality music in Cape Town.

O’ltak arrived bushy tailed and bright eyed at the Red Bull Studios in Cape Town at the beginning of 2010. He was armed with an arsenal of glitched-out, raw beats in the vein of Flying Lotus and Samiyam – the west coast Hip-Hop which had inspired him most. His taste was already eclectic and meshing together sounds from all over the genre spectrum. O’ltak was the model for the phrase “a diamond in the rough”.

He melts together a perfect blend of dance-floor friendly head boppers and introspective melodies, which crescendo and flow perfectly.

Munya AKA Mysterion’s innate ability to step outside what he wants to play, and instead, be conscious of what the crowd wants, has progressed him from the reputation of being a respected opening DJ to a valuable addition to any line-up. His trajectory as a DJ in the Cape Town scene has been steady, organic and constantly progressive.

Having spent many hours digging and learning about music in Cape Town’s now legendary Choice Records Store, he took mentorship from those in the scene who he looked up to and respected most.

Mysterion began Djing in 2007 and his hobby turned to obsession rapidly. He began fine-tuning and crafting his sound into a seamless mix between authentic UK Grime inspired tunes, Rolling Drum n Bass build-ups and thick, Rinsing Dubstep anthems. He held court and regularly plied his trade as a constant fixture in line-ups on his home-turf, FICTION Bar in the Long Street, Cape Town, where he put many hours into music in many aspects.

Since coming into his own as a well-known, great quality DJ, his gigs have included warming up for international headliners such as Drumsound (UK), Nymfo (ND), Camo & Krooked (AU), Ali B (UK) and local hero’s Niskerone, Mix n Blend, Fletcher,Counterstrike, Tasha Baxter, Hyphen and Dj low to name a few.

He always plays the music which he grew up on and build a love for but is experienced enough to enjoy a broad selection of electronic music, and his technical abilities continue to grow from strength to strength.

An audio/visual explosion

Live stage performer and producer, MR SAKITUMI has been instrumentally aligned with the electronic music scene in South Africa for nearly 2 decades. Alongside long-time collaborator and partner-in-time, The Grrrl, the two create a fusion of beats and visual treats.

After being members of numerous influential South African acts such as Max Normal, Lark, Closet Snare and others, along with performances in Goldfish, Freshly Ground, EJ von Lyrik, Gazelle, Krush & Sorted and many more – it is evident that MR SAKITUMI and The Grrrl are an ingenious musical partnership the likes of which are few and far between in the world of electronic music.

Mixing wildly apt visuals of The Grrrl with the live looping of drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, sampler or scratching of this musical phenomenon is a multi-instrumental extravaganza, whose stage antics reflects quirkiness and a dash of seriousness and ensures an audio/visual feast of the senses.

Side by side, they form two thirds of Krushed & Sorted and one third of Closet Snare having, and as a pair have recently performed at PITCH festival 2011 (Amsterdam) alongside artists like The Gaslamp Killer, Cut Chemist, Flying Lotus and Dorian Concept.

Mr. Sakitumi released his debut album, SECRET ASIAN MAN, in June 2011, and the pair have since then lovingly and humorously conquered every stage and gig put before them.

Having been exposed to music from an early age from his fathers extensive record collection of 60′s, 70′s and 80′s Rock, Funk and Soul, Jakobsnake’s fascination with sound and music soon bred into intrinsic passion.

He began drumming and writing lyrics at the age of 10 and 13 respectively and for a Bar Mitzvah gift from his mother, he was given the opportunity to learn how to DJ.

His upbringing in bustling Joburg and the influences around him encouraged him to nurture and explore his varied musical interests and talents, and he quickly became a common feature as a budding young talent in bands and informal Cyphers alike.

After traveling to London and America and being exposed to an international scene and standard for left-field electronica, Jakobsnake realised the true scope of what a more focused career in music had to offer, and he made this his mission. He moved to Cape Town in the hopes of being part of its nurturing and innovative electronic music scene.

Fast-forward to today and he is one of the busiest characters around.

One half of the BTEAM DJ group, a rapper and beatboxer in Electronic Rap outfit Voicetag and the drummer for Spoek Mathambo and Mshini Wam – Jakobsnake has a career as eclectic and spontaneous as his solo DJ sets.

2010 and 2011 saw him tour around the world as part of Mshini Wam including all over Europe, North America and South America and play countless gigs with both BTEAM, Voicetag and as his solo Project – Jakobsnake.

Having been instrumental in exposing more of an African sound to the Electronic music circuit in Cape Town, starting the AfroClap! parties, Jakobsnake’s love for diversity and his country is evident throughout his music and personality.

One things for sure though, you wont be standing still when he plays.

These days it is rare for a young musician to have such a well-earned and perfectly tuned instinct about music production, track selection and the craft of Djing. In a landscape of easily accessible tools and tricks, few take the time to “climb the ladder” in a natural and progressive way, with hunger and passion as a motivating factor, not fame. Das Kapital is a young musical force who displays all these qualities, and is a great example of what can be accomplished with hard word, determination and excellent natural talent.

It can be argued that Cape Town native, Das Kapital broke into “mainstream” consciousness with his bootleg of Bon Iver’s modern day classic “Skinny Love”. Picked up by upfront music blog aggregator Hype Machine, his mix was #1 on the weekly play chart three separate times and to date has been favourited by over 20,000 people.

A slew of further official remixes have followed both locally and internationally, and all are in agreement that they have all benefited from his expert touch so far.

Refusing to be tied down by any one genre, but deeply connected to the mood of his music, he seeks to take people on an introspective journey through intricate percussion, brooding melodies and dark bass, whether it be on a dance-floor or through their headphones. Always drawing from his surroundings, Das Kapital’s style is an ever-growing bank of tribal rhythms and heaving drums, twisted and chopped into something that signifies his musical prowess.

A confident and entertaining DJ, he is a regular feature at premier Cape Town Electronic parties, has supported International acts and has become a major act to watch on the festival circuit, taking many Electronic Stages by storm. Mashing up everything from Electro to Kuduro to Dancehall, it is clear that versatility is his weapon of choice.

Along with his collaborations with South African rising talents, he seems set to keep growing in stature and profile throughout the Electronic Dance Music scene worldwide.
