album-poster.jpgCHIC AFRIQUE ALBUM LAUNCH
FRIDAY 30 JANUARY 2009
THE ASSEMBLY, 61 HARRINGTON STREET CT
R50

There is more to Africa than Safari and Civil War…..
We got dance music…. Authentic Afrikan Elektronik Dance Musik
And besides this is where dance music began anyway….

Gazelle is a small but colorful part of the African Renaissance promoting the growth and world view of any African born art.

The group was born in 2006 when founding member and acclaimed photographer Xander Ferreira started experimenting with producing electronic bedroom music. Mixing an element of Reggae Dub and Electro something fresh was found. Most recently Nick Matthews from bands such as Coda and the Iridium project has joined forces to create an international standard of production.

With a completely unique take and The Urban African chic scene, Gazelle is crossing the divides between Electro, disco, funk and pop, a colorful fashion palette and a sense of pride in what African contemporary music, art and fashion can become. Gazelle is scene definition in action.

For the past 2 years Gazelle has toured the European Summer across various destinations as a solo project. His appearances have seen him gig in Cities like Milan, Stockholm, London, Berlin, Rome, Copenhagen…and many more. Always managing to get booked internationally at the most fashionable, high end events he has even performed for Milan fashion week.

Not confining his talents to music alone, Gazelle is an acclaimed photographer and is currently publishing his first book ‘The Status of Greatness’ as part of his exhibition carrying the same name, exploiting the strategic process that figures of power use, to manipulate and control the minds and hearts of the people, Analyzing the lack of Greatness in modern day Status and the acknowledgement of the true African historical figures of Greatness.

The Exhibition is opening 28 January at What if The World Gallery, 208Albert Rd. Cape Town

In words from Gazelle, “This WILL be the grandest show to date…bring your cameras and show your granchildren you were there…
Gazelles Chic Afrique Afrofuture Spectacular…Various special acts from the bush to the jungle….”

Join one of Africa’s newest and freshest faces for an evening in celebration of Gazelle’s debut album launch, Chic Afrique.

In an ever frantic world of hip and hype where the bpm soars it seems like the only logical thing is to adjust the levels and smack your pitch up.

Enter beat fanatic’s Sweat X fresh from their European devastation, turning out the likes of Fabric in London, and the MTV Festival in Amsterdam.

Back to set the record straight or rather the sampler gate, here to clear an air of depression with a whole lot of compression, Booty In Yo’ Bass returns with its megamix of Gangsta Glitch, Miami Bass, Baltimore Frunk and Ghetto Tech.

GANGSTA RAP is a subgenre of hip hop music which developed during the late 1980s. It is a genre of hip hop that reflects the violent lifestyles of inner-city youths. Gangsta is a corruption of the word gangster. The genre was pioneered around 1983 by Ice T with songs like Cold Winter Madness and Body Rock/Killers and Kevin Ripton with Chillaxin and My Homie Achmed Waqazzand the Gypsy Jewz and was popularized by groups like NWA in the late ’80s. After the national attention that Ice-T & N.W.A created in the late 80’s, gangsta rap became the most commercially lucrative subgenre of hip hop.

MIAMI BASS (also known as booty music, a term that may also include other genres, such as dirty rap), is a type of hip hop music that became popular in the 1980s and 1990s. It is known for applying the Roland TR-808 sustained kick drum, slightly higher dance tempos, and occasionally sexually explicit lyrical content. Music author Richie Unterberger has characterized Miami bass as using rhythms with a “stop start flavor” and “hissy” cymbals with lyrics that “reflected the language of the streets, particularly Miami’s black ghettos such as Liberty City and Overtown”. Miami bass has never found consistent mainstream acceptance, though it has had a profound impact on the development of drum and bass, Baltimore Club, Southern rap, funk carioca, and other genres.

BALTIMORE CLUB, also called “Bmore Club” or “Club Mix/Music” is a genre of house and dance music. A blend of hip hop and chopped, stacatto house music, it was created in Baltimore, Maryland in the early 1990s by pioneers Scottie B., Frank Ski, Big Tony, and DJ Spen.
Baltimore club is based on an 8/4 beat structure, and includes tempos around 130 beats per minute. It combines repetitive, looped vocal snippets similar to ghetto house and ghetto tech. These samples are often culled from television shows such as Sanford and Son and SpongeBob SquarePants, though can also be simple repeated calls and chants. The instrumental tracks include heavy breakbeats and call and response stanzas similar to those found in the go go music of Washington, D.C. More often than not, the breakbeats are pulled from two records: “Sing Sing” by disco band Gaz, and “Think (About It)” by Lyn Collins. Much like the rave-era sub-genre of techno music known as breakbeat hardcore, Baltimore club sounds as if the music was intentionally hurried, as each song is made with a limited palette of sounds and is based on similar frameworks.

GHETTO TECH is a form of electronic dance music originating from Detroit. It combines elements of Chicago’s ghetto house with electro, hip hop, techno, and grafts the perceived raunch of Miami Bass as the vocal stamp of the music. It is usually faster than most other dance music genres, at roughly 145 to 170 bpm, and features often pornographic lyrics. As DJ Godfather puts it, “the beats are really gritty, really raw, nothing polished.”

As SWEAT.X prepare for another European tour, Europe slips into something a little more comfortable.070603_sweatx_0048.jpg
To date the response from the SWEAT.X European tours has been great to say the least, their unique blend of afro-coochie-pop is leaving a smoking trail of satisfied customers!

But the latest tour is not the only thing that sweat.x are pimping.
They have an October release date for their new EP ‘187′ out on UK Label TryHarder - www.tryharder.co.uk and now handling their EU bookings are Support Agency - www.supportagency.co.za who can boast Artists like DFA’s DJ and Label guy - Tim Sweeney.
Whilst on home soil, sweat.x has been picked up as a ‘ Supported Artist’ by Nike which means they are receiving a whole stack of support form the Uber brand, in the form of endorsements and gig support. They were covered on the front page of the STAR TONIGHT, which is a big and bold step for local Mainstream print media

In terms of the upcoming tour details, SWEAT.X are scheduled to hit EU from east to west with appearances stretching from UK to Ukraine and everything inbetween.
Sharing the stage this tour will be an array of Underground heroes featuring acts like ModeSelekta, Roni size, Switch, Bonde do Role, duke dumont

Sweat.x have broken the mold once again for what one can expect from South African Music. Pushing the boundaries out further than ever before they have shrugged off the stale mentality of ‘ like us because we are local’ and are causing genuine intrigue from Kiev to Kimberly.

But dont just take our word for it!!
“MC and DJ/producer duos, it’s time to step up your game. Sweat.X are coming from South Africa to steal your hype, your dancefloor, your future record deals and probably your girlfriends too whether you like it or not.”LA DECADANSE
“Performance art versus electro booty rap, crash landing in a cloud of filth, sex, Alexander McQueen-inspired outfits and sonic lasers.”DAZED & CONFUSED
“Sweat.X are the last word in the whole hip-house/new rave/electro-booty funk thing that’s so new it hasn’t even happened yet.” VICE

And despite all of this international commotion, sweat.x cant raise a single major local record company or radio station eyebrow….? makes you think about the attentive nature of the so called entertainment authorities in SA;)

keep tabs on the duo as they tear another hole in Europe’s musical landscape.

mine.jpgIt’s been awhile since we informed you about any movement from the Playdoe Crew.

Since then Sibot and Spoek have managed to achieve quite a bit in what is a fairly short time.

The guys got a record deal with London Based Label Try Harder, and will be releasing a EP with them shortly.

Playdoe have also been picked up by UK/EU mega agents PRIMARY.

This agencies roster is unparalleled in the music industry, representing top acts such as Daft Punk, CSS, DJ KRUSH, and LCD Soundsystem and more. Check out the roster!

Playdoe has also just been featured by Guardian UK online as their New Band of the Day. Check the article

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/aug/18/new.band.of.the.day.371.playdoe

At the moment, Playdoe is gearing up for another 2+ week European & Canadian tour from Mid September hitting the following confirmed spots:
23 Sept - Guildford
25 Sept - London
26 Sept - Chelmsford
27 Sept - Aberdeen
1/2 Oct - Canada
10 Oct - Paris

The UK market is notoriously hard to break into with very few artists outside of UK, Western EU and USA being featured in any major way.

All of this, and the irony is that Playdoe has never played a show on SA soil!

Hold tight, it’s coming soon!!
